One Year Anniversary

Well it is now my one year anniversary of my stroke! In many ways I thought that I would be pretty much back to "normal" by now! Well that just shows how wrong I can be! A few things I will not be able to do again! Many things I can do, but with anywhere from a little, to a lot of modification or assisting equipment! There are some things that will take a bit more time too. I am glad that I started going to The Center too. It is a regular reminder that things could be a lot different and difficult for me! Some stuff I have to contract out, like my lawn work, cleaning my gutters and other stuff! I needed to start outsourcing that kind of stuff anyway! I continue to be able to do things that a few months ago were not possible! Some days are better than others too. Some days start not so good and end up pretty good. Other days are quite the opposite! By and large though most of the time, if I pace myself, I do pretty well - considering! I have learned patience as well as finding different ways to do many things. Ram Dass called it, Being Stroked, and I understand why. I have learned a great deal of humility as well as how to ask for help. While I wouldn't wish it on anyone, in many ways this has been a great gift to me! I have learned to appreciate the simple things a lot more! Along with that is the realization that a lot of the "things" I have are just that - things. They may be fun but don't define who you are!

Starting out

I had a stroke on June 5th. Since then I have learned a lot about how little people know about them. My journey is not special or unique, but it is mine. I was active until then and "nornmal". Now that changes daily. I use a walker and wheelchair to get around the house for now but will eventually need neither. Walking is a trip because it involves balance, as does just about everything. My left side is good but my right side needs work yet! It will be some time before I am free of my "helpers"! I am able to do most things but some like laundry and vacuum cleaners are just beyond me at this time! I have had to learn to not be so independent! This is not easy for me! I can't drive yet so have to rely on friends and delivery! Some stuff a have to get special treatment like trash service. This blog isn't to get sympathy but to help others to understand what is going on with others in similar situations! I am undergoing Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapy....

Late Night Thoughts

I was going to write about the fact that I can't drive, yet. Instead I thought I would be   better off writing about how I have to keep reminding myself of my advances! It is only to easy to focus on the things I have temporarily lost! I haven't permanently lost anything but only temporarily lost them! This is important to me! I need to repeat this  I haven't permanently lost anything! I may have had to make some concessions due to various reasons but not loss. I needed to make some of these changes some time back anyhow!  Gratitude is the one thing that I feel most! Gratitude for so many reasons! I am still mobile! Yes, I have to use a walker or wheelchair all the time, but that will eventually change! I am so grateful for my therapists too. Because of them I am able to do things easier, and perhaps because I was shown it was even possible! Looking Back

I have to look back over the last few months periodically! Sometimes it is to remind me of where I was when I was first in the hospital when I was first coming to terms with where I was. Sometimes it is to look around myself and realize that all that much hasn't really changed! I have to give myself credit for my recovery so far, but it is because of the recommendations, suggestions, and work of my therapists! I have also been encouraged all along by my friends. If it wasn't for many people I would not have made the progress that has been made! I still have a  ways to go but it is doable! When I think something is not going to happen, I have to remember many things that I now do were beyond me not to long ago! Just a few days ago I started to drive again. While so far I have not traveled out of the neighborhood but that is a huge step for me. That was not only a benchmark of physical capabilities for me, but also a mental accomplishment.
